MEADOWLANE JOINS NSPCC SAFE CHILD SCHEME

Retailers and Centre Management in Meadowlane Shopping Centre have signed up to the NSPCC Safe Child Scheme in a bid to keep shopping safe for children who get separated from their parents or carers while out shopping.
The scheme has been set up to minimise the anxiety caused when children get lost while out shopping with their families. The NSPCC recognises that even a short separation can be distressing for both child and adult.
Centre management at Meadowlane shopping centre and staff from its retailers took part in the training which gave them simple steps to follow to reduce the distress caused when a young child gets lost.
Moninne Dargan, NSPCC safeguarding in business officer, said: “In all the bustle of shopping it’s easier for young children to become separated from their families. Safe Child Scheme members can help to keep shopping a safe and enjoyable shopping experience.”
Central to the scheme is the ‘holding hands’ logo displayed by shops at child height at entrances and at tills or checkouts. PSNI Education Officers are making themselves available for schools to tell children to look out for this Safe Child sign and to teach them the steps to follow if they are separated from their parents or carers. A list of steps to be taken by retail staff, parents or carers and by children is contained in a leaflet to help ensure everyone knows what to do if a child does get lost.
